âLance, we have a problem,â Jason said, sitting down across from Lance in his dressing room. They were about to go on stage in about twenty minutes. Theyâd been on tour for about four weeks now and things had been going great other than missing Samantha and Emma.
âWhatâs up?â he asked, putting his phone down. He was just about to call Samantha. He always called her before a show, after a show, before he went to sleep, and when he woke up-- pretty much whenever he could. Talking to her so often had helped make being apart a little more bearable.
Jason sighed and ran his hand through his shoulder-length black hair. While Lance usually dressed in jeans or leather pants and a simple t-shirt, Jason usually wore some funky shorts and crazy t-shirt with the sleeves ripped off. He was known to play his drums during a show without his shirt on most of the time. Sometimes he even liked to play with his back to the audience. He claimed it put on a better show for the fans.
âOur manager called. All of a sudden, the record label guys donât like a few of the songs on the new album. They want us to postpone the release, and after the tour is over, go to LA to redo them,â he said quickly in one breath, bracing himself for Lanceâs reaction.
âWhat?â Lance asked him. Surely heâd heard him wrong. Theyâd worked their asses off on their latest album and were thrilled about it. Theyâd grown as artists and it was like nothing theyâd ever done before.
âThe record label guys want us to redo a few songs,â he repeated, nervously twirling a drumstick between his fingers.
âAre you fucking kidding me?â Lance sat forward in his chair disgusted, putting his elbows on his knees.
Jason shook his head. âI wish I was.â âWhat do the other guys say?â He asked.
âThey say itâs up to us,â Jason shrugged. The Forbidden Gods also had a lead singer and a bassist, but the bandleaders were really Lance and Jason. Theyâd started the band long ago when they were kids and the other two guys left a lot of the business decisions up to them.
âFuck,â Lance exclaimed, getting up from his chair. He started pacing the room. âWhat about our fans? And the money we lose by not releasing during the tour?â
âI know, man,â Jason said. âBut they said if we donât, they might drop us. Our manager strongly suggested we at least go talk to them.â
âI thought they liked it all? They did when we left LA months ago,â he stopped pacing and scrubbed his face with his hand.
âThey did. Someone higher up must have heard something they didnât like. They wonât even tell me what needs to be fixed. Something about it not being âmainstreamâ enough or something,â Jason muttered.
Lance sighed. âWhat if we donât do it?â He wasnât in this business to make suits happy. He was in it to play the music he loved. The money and fame had just been an added bonus.
